Multilayer PEX (MLP) Pipe: Combining Strength and Versatility

Multilayer PEX (MLP) pipe, also known as PEX-AL-PEX, is a composite pipe engineered for a wide range of plumbing and heating jobs. Its clever design features an inner and outer layer of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) bonded to a central layer of aluminium. This combination gives it some handy advantages:

While MLP doesn't have a strict colour-coding system to indicate different uses like standard PEX, the outer PEX layer can come in various colours, often linked to the manufacturer or a specific product range. However, these colours don't reliably tell you what the pipe is for (like hot or cold water) across different brands.

Key features and benefits of MLP include:

Built-in Oxygen Barrier: The aluminium layer stops oxygen from getting into the system water, which is really important for preventing rust in central heating systems.
Holds its Shape: Once you bend MLP, it stays put, meaning you might not need as many fittings.
Less Expansion and Contraction: The aluminium core helps to reduce how much the pipe expands and shrinks with temperature changes.
Tough and Long-Lasting: The multi-layer construction makes it really good at handling pressure and temperature.

So, unlike standard PEX, don't assume what an MLP pipe is for based on its outside colour. Always check the printing on the pipe and the manufacturer's specs to know its pressure and temperature ratings, what it's designed to be used for (e.g., drinking water, heating), and any New Zealand certifications it has. MLP is a strong and adaptable piping option, but its job is determined by its technical details, not just its colour.
